How Experience Shapes Us

Our early life experiences shape how we relate to ourselves, others, and the world. From a young age, we develop ways of adapting to what we encounter. These adaptations are intelligent and protective, helping us manage situations and emotions that may have felt overwhelming at the time.

Over time, however, these patterns can continue operating outside of our awareness. What once helped us cope can begin to limit us, affecting our relationships, our sense of self, and our ability to move freely in our lives.

These patterns may show up as:

  • Avoiding feelings or difficult experiences

  • Overthinking or persistent rumination

  • Self-criticism or shame

  • Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected

  • Chronic tension or bracing

  • Difficulty trusting or relying on others

Therapy offers a space to understand these patterns with curiosity and compassion, allowing for greater awareness, flexibility, and meaningful change.
