How trauma shapes us

As humans, we are shaped and wired by our early life experiences, this is a fundamental part of our human intelligence.

From a young age, we develop ways to adapt to what’s happening around us.

When we experience pain or any emotion or event that overwhelms us, we instinctively find ways to manage it in order to protect ourselves and survive.

These coping mechanisms often save us in the moment and help us to navigate the world. However, as we grow older, they continue to operate unconsciously and can end up limiting us, preventing us from living a more fulfilled and authentic life.

These patterns and behaviors can show up as

  • Avoidance of feelings and experiences

  • Trying to control others

  • Dissociation: feeling spaced out or numb

  • Over thinking or Ruminating

  • Physical tension/bracing for danger

  • Self shaming , inner critic, judgmental
